The name hippopotamus is derived from Ancient Greek for River Horse.
Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day in the water, on cloudy days they often come out to lie on the river or dams edge.

They come out of the water at night and can travel up to 6 kilometres in search of the grass that they eat.

Despite their calm appearance, hippos kill more people in African than lions or crocodiles.

They are normally found in family groups consisting of cows, calves and bulls. The group is led by one territorial bull which strictly controls its mating territory. Younger or other males are tolerated only if they are submissive and leave the females alone.

Hippos challenges are fearsome fights, their long canines inflicting gaping wounds or even resulting in death.
Losing a challenge forces the defeated hippo to find a new home.

There are several words describing a group of hippos – pod, herd, raft and the most unusual one, bloat.

Hippos have proved very popular among my clients and that is why I have made a few different sculptures of them.
